A small gift goes wrong when it’s a thing for the sake of a thing: a gadget nobody asked for, a candle in a scent nobody likes. It goes right when it’s something the person will use every day and wouldn’t buy for themselves.
That’s the rule for this list. Everything here is under $25 at most retailers, and every one of them gets used.
How we chose
We started from people, not products: the coworker you don’t know well, the host of a party, the teacher, the friend who reads in bed. Then we looked for the one small thing each of them would actually use, from brands with a long track record.
Prices move a lot in November and December, so check before you buy. A few of these are often cheaper on Black Friday.

Wrap small gifts well. A plain box, good paper and a real ribbon do more for a $20 gift than another $20 would. Add a one-line card that says why you picked it.
